You haven't read The Left Hand of Darkness ?! Run to the nearest bookstore! It may seem a bit mild today, but it changed the face of science fiction when it appeared. I actually did a drawing of Estraven and Genly Ai long ago. I'll scan and post it, so that you can see how I envision them. Of the Ku...

Dear Heather, I'm very happy to see the continuation of both series! They continue to develop very interesting and distinct universes. The milieu of the Gem series has a fin-de-siècle feel that reminds me of Erté and of Kushner's mannerpunk novels and stories. Also, the Garnet two -- perhaps because...

Unexpected pleasure -- and 1000th post on the forum!

I've mostly given up on fantasy/fiction based on Greek mythology or history. Treatments are usually so inaccurate and/or ham-fisted that I've been tempted to write a blog essay titled "Hands off my mythology!" So imagine my welcome surprise when I cautiously opened Jo Graham's Black Ships ...

New artist joins the site

Some of you may have noticed that there is a new album in the Gallery. Right now it has a placeholder image, but it will soon contain more work by Kay Holt, who is the co-founder and co-editor of Crossed Genres -- but also a writer and artist in her own right.

Dear friend, I remember the first version of this marvelous piece and the occasion, too: a wonderful birthday present two weeks before my operation. This captures the moment exactly -- spare, stark, eloquent. The mood reminds me of Princess Mononoke, perhaps because I always thought of Adh'isa as th...

Dear Angel, great to hear that you're writing! Please send the story to me first for previewing. Also, please recall that this site doesn't post fanfiction.

Yuck factor

We just saw District 9 . I can't believe the Tomatometer stands at 88%! The film is awful, but not because of the aliens. Think of Alien Nation meeting (or is it fusing?) with The Fly by way of Alien and Aliens , add a splash of Cry, The Beloved Country and Black Hawk Down , not forgetting, of cours...

Sometimes laughter is the best weapon

Some of you may be following the controversy over major "framer" Chris Mooney's latest book, Unscientific American . Its primary thesis is that scientific illiteracy in the US is the scientists' fault. And some of you may be following the rioting over the latest cover of the newly resurrec...

Re: Fortune and fame to the watchful and patient!

For this event I have patiently waited! I'm so happy you enjoyed the interview, Marie! I had a wonderful time, because Kay was so interested and well informed. I've had great luck with my editors so far. As for the fiction, you have been with me on this journey from its start. I don't know if, or w...

Now fortune is beckoning as well!

At the heels of the interview, Crossed Genres also accepted a story, Dry Rivers . Some of you may recognize the title, it is one of the legends that appear in Spider Silk . They will publish it in their next issue, which focuses on alternative history. Just when I had come to think that my genre-cro...

Fame is Beckoning!

When my review of the Star Trek reboot appeared at Centauri Dreams , Peggy Kolm of Biology in Science Fiction wrote a post about it which attracted the attention of the editors of an online speculative magazine. As a result, yours truly is now holding forth in the latest issue of Crossed Genres . An...
