Sounds like a fascinating book! For some reason getting my head around math is harder for me than physics. I don't know why since physics is so heavily reliant on math, but there it is. I would love to find some reading that sheds some light on the world of math without it being so far over my head ...

I recognize that the subject has a place in fiction and that nothing should be barred from inquiry and exploration. At the same time, I feel that authors shouldn't use it for easy shock effect or to offer novelty to jaded readers. I agree with both of these sentiments completely. Many times I've fo...

Trial of Flowers by Jay Lake

I just forced myself to finish a book I didn't like becuase it was well written. What does this mean? And what do I say about it? I've read a number of poorly written bo...

What do it mean?

I just forced myself to finish a book I didn't like becuase it was well written. What does this mean? And what do I say about it? I've read a number of poorly written books that have somehow held my attention, perhaps because the plot was good, or the characters were compelling. Of course, I've read...

Although *thinks* I do enjoy a good gadget every now and again. Also when there are some absolutes (or near ones) like human biology or Newtonian physics aplied to things like planets and gravity and such, I like to get a glimpse of the workings. But schematics? Asided from what artistic qualities t...

I put this question to a literary friend of mine with whom you are aquainted. Her response was succinct and I agree.

"If it's fiction of any sort - it needs to be plot driven."

Ok - but that is at least something to go on. Carbon based life with an H2O substrate will have some parameters, correct?

Yes the equation takes all of these factors in account, and I'm sure I'm stating the obvious, but is there any consensus on these issues? I know I'm asking a lot. I'd love to see a bibliography on the subject. I apologise if this has already been provided - but Yahoo blips being what they are, I may...

Looks good in here! :D So... Where are the extraterrestrials? If the math and the science point to their existance than perhaps it is reasonably safe (for the sake of the argument anyway) to consider them a given. Where they are depends on who they are, doesn't it? Since we don't have any other exam...
